DVRPC pursues an active, wide-ranging approach to improving safety for all road users. With our regional partners, DVRPC embraced a Vision Zero goal of eliminating deaths and serious injuries from crashes in the region by 2050. To advance this goal, DVRPC integrated safety priorities into the Long-Range Plan and expanded the number and depth of safety-focused projects and programs. This included the development of a Regional Vision Zero plan and continues the over 20-year history of safety planning at DVRPC and of the Regional Safety Task Force, our public-facing safety forum. Staff collaborates across offices on High Injury Network corridor and area studies to help county and local partners advance transportation safety efforts to eliminate roadway deaths and serious injuries.

Regional Safety Task Force (RSTF)
The RSTF brings together a multi-disciplinary group of professionals to discuss solutions for reducing the number of crashes and the resultant casualties in the region. The committee typically meets quarterly, and RSTF Coffee Hour virtual meetings occur monthly. Together these gatherings build effective partnerships, facilitate information exchange, and inform safety planning efforts.
Regional Vision Zero
DVRPC and its planning partners are developing a safety action program to advance the Long-Range Plan’s target to achieve Regional Vision Zero (RVZ)—no transportation fatalities or serious injuries on the roadway—by 2050. This multi-year project has produced a data-driven Regional High Injury Network to inform safety planning, identified priority corridors for further examination, and sought to elevate safety culture by communicating safety principles through county partners to our municipalities. Through RVZ we have also assisted subregional partners seeking federal safety funds for planning through the Safe Streets and Roads for All grant program.
