New White Paper Assesses Truck Parking in Greater Philadelphia
The availability of freight truck parking is a national, state, and local concern. Lack of safe and designated truck parking leads to illegal or undesignated parking. This has negative impacts on the environment, economy, and quality of life for both drivers and residents of the communities where illegal parking is occurring. This issue has become more pressing as the number of trucks on the road continues to increase due to the growth of e-commerce and demand for on-time deliveries.
With the aim of identifying and mitigating truck parking problems in the Greater Philadelphia region, DVRPC reviewed state parking plans from Pennsylvania and New Jersey, inventoried available truck parking and utilization data, and conducted a municipal survey to identify truck parking issues in the region. The results of this research are now available in a new white paper, Regional Truck Parking Assessment, a component of DVRPC’s forthcoming Regional Freight Plan.
The white paper reviews the root causes and needs for expanded truck parking in the region and examines the regional relevance of state parking studies. It also identifies opportunities for DVRPC and its planning partners to address the need for expanding parking by supporting state recommendations and investing in local solutions. Flexibility and coordination between industry and all levels of government will be needed to meet the future needs of the growing goods movement industry. Read the report.
