Integrating Hazard Mitigation and Comprehensive Planning

With funding from FEMA Region III, DVRPC organized and led a regional discussion on integrating hazard mitigation planning and comprehensive planning in April 2016. This one-day workshop brought together planners and emergency management personnel from DVRPC's nine counties, staff from various state agencies including Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency (PEMA) and New Jersey Office of Emergency Management (NJOEM), and representatives from FEMA Region II and Region III. The workshop highlighted how various counties are maximizing the value of the hazard mitigation planning process and combining hazard mitigation planning activities with those of comprehensive planning. Participants also discussed challenges and opportunities to improve the FEMA hazard mitigation planning process. Stephen Marks, Municipal Manager of Hoboken, NJ, presented on the challenges that Hoboken faced after Superstorm Sandy and the steps that the city has taken since then to be better prepared for a future disaster.
