PA Turnpike Interchange Study

As part of Montgomery County's 2015 Turnpike Corridor Reinvestment Project, the county identified a need for seven new or modified PA Turnpike (I-276) interchanges. DVRPC is studying two of the proposed new interchanges at Henderson Road in Upper Merion Township and Welsh Road in Upper Dublin Township. The construction of new interchanges at these locations would increase PA Turnpike access for many communities, supporting the revitalization of business parks in these two locations.

The new interchanges will undoubtedly affect local traffic; the goal of this DVRPC study is to identify these traffic impacts by analyzing existing and future (2045) traffic patterns in the AM and PM peak hours. DVRPC’s study will compare existing conditions at each location to a 2045 No Build scenario (i.e. respective interchange is not built) and a 2045 Build scenario (i.e. respective new interchange would be built). The study will also provide recommendations for the local roadway network to support these major PA Turnpike improvements.

Upper Merion Township hosted the first steering committee meeting for the Henderson Road Interchange project on June 4, 2018. A second steering committee meeting was held on September 14, 2018 to review progress before the September open house.

DVRPC is continuing to model the existing conditions scenario to obtain performance measures for the existing evening peak. Next, the project team will begin modeling future scenarios (No Build and Build) to better understand the impact of the proposed interchange on local roadways. Finally, areas in need of congestion mitigation will be identified, and recommendations for roadway improvements will be developed to address these needs.
