The DVRPC/PennDOT Connects Complete Streets Resurfacing Program is an effort to identify roads for potential investment in bike-friendly and other complete street improvements as part of regularly scheduled PennDOT resurfacing projects.
DVRPC recently launched a map of finished segments for the DVRPC/PennDOT Complete Streets Resurfacing Program. The web map shows bike lanes, sharrows, buffered bike lanes, parking protected bike lanes, painted shoulders, and protected bike lanes completed through the Complete Streets Resurfacing Program over the years. Since the program’s launch, it has added approximately 54 miles of connective infrastructure to the four Pennsylvania collar counties in the DVRPC region. The Complete Streets Resurfacing Program is an effort to identify roads for potential investment in bike-friendly and other complete street improvements as part of regularly scheduled PennDOT resurfacing projects. DVRPC and PennDOT District 6 work with the four counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery counties), East Coast Greenway, and the Bicycle Coalition of Greater Philadelphia to coordinate these improvements.
The program’s goals are to identify important connections to expand the bicycle network, improve safety for people bicycling and walking, and implement new facilities quickly and efficiently. In the suburbs, a screening process relies on local and county priorities to identify potential projects, and then the counties, DVRPC, and PennDOT work with the municipalities to build support from local officials to move forward with the improvement. Design costs for the new facilities are covered by a line item on the regional Transportation Improvement Program. DVRPC also supports a related program in Philadelphia, using capacity analysis to help determine the feasibility of projects that meet the City of Philadelphia’s high-quality bike network goals.
Improvements are focused on reconfiguring roadways to establish high-quality connections using existing infrastructure in southeastern PA suburban counties. Recently added facilities include 1.3 miles of buffered bike lanes on Second Street Pike (SR 232) in Upper Southampton and 0.6 miles of bike lanes and painted shoulders on Richboro Road and Yardley Newtown Road (SR 332) in Bucks County. May is Bike Month! At DVRPC, we’re committed to helping make biking simpler and safer. We support local bicycle planning efforts by collecting data, planning projects, and determining best practices. We also collaborate with our county and municipal partners to move planned projects to implementation and construction.
