The DVRPC region will see new electric vehicle infrastructure projects in counties across Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
At the October meeting, the DVRPC Board approved a Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) action to invest $2 million of federal CRP funding in the Delaware County Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Program. This was the latest commitment by the Board to support the deployment of EV infrastructure in the Greater Philadelphia region. Over the past year, over $15 million of investment for local EV charging infrastructure has been programmed for projects in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery, and Philadelphia counties in Pennsylvania, and Camden and Mercer counties in New Jersey.
This regional commitment to EV infrastructure complements projects PennDOT, NJDOT, and other state and federal partners are advancing. New Jersey has long been a leader in the EV market, funding thousands of home chargers and hundreds of public chargers through programs like “Charge Up New Jersey” and “It Pays to Plug In.” Now Pennsylvania is emerging as a national leader after recently opening its twentieth federally funded charging station through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. This latest project marks a total federal investment of approximately $11.5 million in Pennsylvania. EV usage has significantly increased in recent years, and EVs now comprise 1.5 percent of all motor vehicle registrations in Pennsylvania and 3 percent in New Jersey.
The region’s commitment to EVs and reducing air pollution was recently reinforced through the adoption of Update: Connections 2050, the new long-range plan for Greater Philadelphia. This includes supporting the electrification of municipal, transit, and commercial fleets, and deploying EV charging infrastructure with a focus on access for more communities.
