In atlas format, the Delaware Valley Rail Freight Plan describes, promotes, and lays out a capital improvement program for a key regional resource: the Delaware Valley's rail freight network. Twenty-two maps depict rail freight operations and facilities in the region including the competitive access accorded to three major carriers (i.e., the Norfolk Southern, CSX, and the Canadian Pacific), high and wide clearance routes, modern intermodal facilities, and a set of vigorous short line ailroads. The Delaware Valley Rail Freight Plan provides a foundation for incorporating rail freight considerations into DVRPC's short and long range transportation planning. The core of the plan is the FasTrax Improvement Program. FasTrax is a multi-faceted program which is intended to maximize the local rail network, remove any barriers to freight flows, and spur integration of all transportation modes. It consists of 90 individual projects, with known costs of approximately $90 million in private and public funds.Geographic Area Covered: Delaware Valley Region
Key Words: goods movement, rail freight, Class I railroads, short line railroads, operations, facilities, Transportation Equity Act for the 21st Century, New Jersey and Pennsylvania Departments of Transportation, Metropolitan Planning Organizations, counties, planning centers and corridors, improvements
