Plan Ahead: World Cup to Bring Millions of Visitors to Region

May 27, 2026

The New Jersey Department of Transportation has shared guidance for people traveling throughout the region during the World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup 2026 is coming soon – and so are millions of visitors, which is anticipated to generate significant traffic congestion and delays in June and July. Matches will take place in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (Philadelphia Field) and East Rutherford, New Jersey (NYNJ Stadium) from June 11 through July 19. Also, “Fan Festivals” with live match broadcasts, music, and performances will be hosted in Philadelphia (at Lemon Hill) and Harrison, NJ (at Sports Illustrated Stadium) during this period.

To help reduce congestion as much as possible and avoid getting stuck in traffic, the New Jersey Department of Transportation is strongly encouraging residents to:

  • Skip non-essential travel on match days
  • Plan alternate routes for commutes
  • Avoid driving near stadiums where matches are happening between 5 hours before and 5 hours after kickoff
  • If travel is essential, try to carpool
  • Check for travel alerts at 511nj.org

It will be particularly beneficial to avoid non-essential travel between 5 hours before and 5 hours after kickoff and in “hotspots” where matches are being played. Information on match locations, dates, and times can be found below:

Information on Fan Festivals can be found below:

Remember:

  • Skip it: Not going to the match? Skip the roads.
  • Shift it: Avoid match-day traffic. Shift travel to off-peak times.
  • Switch it: Appointments and errands during the World Cup? Switch to non-match day.
  • Share it: Carpool to ease congestion. Share a ride.
