Seminar Series: Reducing Energy Costs in Municipal Operations

This seminar series will bring together municipalities in the region to share their experiences and resources for reducing energy costs through cost-effective energy efficiency activities. These free seminars will be an excellent opportunity to learn more about best practices for reducing energy costs that you can use in your operations.

Past Seminars:

Tuesday, November 19th, 2013 9:00am-11:00am, Switch on the Energy Savings — A Hands-On Workshop on Indoor Lighting

Location: Upper Darby Township Administration Building

DVRPC hosted a hands-on workshop highlighting opportunities to save energy and money through indoor lighting projects in municipal buildings. Indoor lighting presents a significant opportunity for municipalities to achieve energy and maintenance costs savings while improving lighting quality. This workshop provided a basic overview of current lighting technology, presented case studies of successful projects around the region, and lead participants on a hands-on lighting audit of the Upper Darby Administration Building.

Resources:

Wednesday, January 30th, 12:30-3:00pm, Outdoor Area Lighting Best Practices in Southeastern Pennsylvania

Location: Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection's Southeast Regional Office

DVRPC hosted a roundtable on best practices for outdoor area lighting projects. Municipalities can spend a significant portion of their energy bills to power outdoor area lighting for streets, roadways, parking lots, recreation fields, and pedestrian areas. There are significant opportunities for energy efficiency and conservation in outdoor area lighting, which result in reductions in energy and maintenance costs, improved safety, and better lighting quality for residents and businesses. This seminar provided a basic overview for municipalities of the emerging technologies and project considerations for outdoor area lighting.

Presentations:

Resources:

Pennsylvania Outdoor Lighting Council: The goal of the POLC is to improve outdoor lighting practices in Pennsylvania by educating municipal officials and the public about good outdoor lighting.

DOE Municipal Solid State Lighting Consortium (MSSLC): The DOE Municipal Solid-State Street Lighting Consortium shares technical information and experiences related to LED street and area lighting demonstrations and serves as an objective resource for evaluating new products on the market intended for street and area lighting applications. Cities, power providers, and others who invest in street and area lighting are invited to join the Consortium and share their experiences.

Wednesday, September 19, 2012, Strategies to Save Money and Energy in Street Lighting: A Roundtable with DVRPC and PECO

DVRPC and PECO hosted a roundtable discussion on strategies to reduce energy use and costs in their street lighting systems.
This roundtable provide an overview of the electric rate design process with a specific focus on the SL-E rate.

Interested in participating in an Energy Efficient Street Lighting Working Group?

Municipalities have expressed interested in convening a regional street lighting working group to explore issues related to street lighting retrofit projects. These issues include vetting emerging technologies (LED, induction, ceramic metal halide, etc.); project engineering (designing for appropriate lighting levels, delamping over-lit areas, combining service locations on customer-owned poles); and project budgeting and financing. If your municipality is interested in participating in this working group, please let us know by e-mail.

Wednesday, June 13th, 2012, Energy Management Best Practices

Municipalities can achieve significant energy cost savings through simple low- or no-cost improvements to their buildings and facilities. This seminar will highlight best practices for tracking energy use, implementing operations and maintenance improvements, and tracking progress over time.

Location: Lower Merion Township Administration Building

April 11, 2012, LED Traffic Signal Conversion Program

Join us for the first seminar in our 2012 Reducing Energy Costs in Municipal Operations Seminar Series. This seminar will provide information on how to participate in the program, and will highlight the financial and safety benefits of converting incandescent traffic signals to LEDs. DVRPC invites all municipalities in southeastern Pennsylvania counties of Bucks, Montgomery, Chester and Delaware to participate in DVRPC's LED Traffic Signal Conversion Program. This program will help municipalities cost-effectively purchase and install LED traffic signal lamps to replace currently-installed incandescent lamps or LED lamps that have reached the end of their useful life. DVRPC's program provides municipalities with streamlined access to low cost lamp procurement and installation.
