Overview
The Regional Trails Program is an important part of DVRPC’s Trails Planning. The program provides both technical assistance and financial support to project sponsors to complete The Circuit, Greater Philadelphia’s 800-plus-mile network of multi-use trails.
The Circuit Trails system takes advantage of the many opportunities to build and connect trails across the region, re-purposing unused rail corridors and developing linear parks along the region's waterways. The Circuit Trails serve as the backbone of a network of "bicycling highways" that allow for safe and efficient travel by bicycle between homes, businesses, parks, open spaces, greenways, schools, and institutions free from motorized traffic.
With financial support from the William Penn Foundation, DVRPC staff provide municipal and county partners with technical assistance when evaluating the feasibility and planning of a trail segment or guidance in the pursuit of outside funding Since 2011, the program has provided over $25 million in funding to over 150 trail planning, design, and construction projects in ten competitive rounds.
