REGIONAL SAFETY TASK FORCE

The Regional Safety Task Force was formed in September 2005 and is an interdisciplinary team of safety stakeholders/professionals that will offer guidance and direction to the Commission's safety conscious planning program. Like NJDOT and PennDOT, DVRPC has adopted the national goal of reducing fatalities to 1.0 per 100MVMT. Through the sharing/pooling of resources, regional safety strategies can be identified, developed, prioritized and implemented as we work to drive down the number of fatalities, serious injuries and crashes in the region.

The focus of the task force is diverse and will address all users and operators of the transportation network and all modes. The approach of the task force is multi-disciplinary and will address the 4E's of safety conscious planning (engineering, education, enforcement, emergency services) in its endeavor of improving safety.

It is expected that this task force will serve as one of the Commission's standing committees. The task force will have a chairperson and a vice chairperson. Meetings are expected to take place 3-4 times per year. Sub-committees will be formed as necessary and members added.

One of the first charges of the task force is to develop a Regional Safety Action Plan. This Plan is intended to highlight and enhance existing programs where possible and develop innovative strategies to address transportation safety issues in the region. For this purpose five subcommittees were formed (engineering, education, enforcement, emergency services, and funding), and have been meeting to put together goals and strategies to reduce transportation related fatalities and injuries.
