KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!

The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT), is sponsoring a Share the Road campaign, designed to educate both motorists and bicyclists about our rights and responsibilities as we jointly use the region's highways.

Traffic laws and common courtesy are necessary for creating safe roads that can be shared by everyone. Unfortunately too many of us forget the simple rules that we are taught as children namely, to practice the concepts of concern and respect for others. Many times motorists park in bike lanes, open car doors into traffic or cut across the path of a moving cyclist. And, cyclists often ride on sidewalks, run red lights, and cycle the wrong way. These kinds of actions too often contribute to serious accidents.

No question about it each of us needs to know the rules and our rights as cyclists and motorists.

Within this region, the Share the Road campaign has identified four key corridors in southeastern Pennsylvania in which to educate all road-users about the importance of traffic laws and good safe behavior. These corridors include Ogontz Avenue in the City of Philadelphia, University City in Philadelphia, Doylestown in Bucks County and the City of Chester in Delaware County. Highlights of each program can be found in the menu on the left.

This site also provides tips for both cyclists and motorists, resources for spreading the word about the Share the Road message and valuable links to other web sites.
