Bicycle Mobility Project
Bicycle Mobility ProjectDVRPC, in cooperation with the Clean Air Council (CAC) and the Bicycle Coalition of the Delaware Valley (BCDV), began a pilot project in January 1998 to expand opportunities for residents in the region to use the bicycle as a mode of travel. Approximately 70 miles of roadway were selected by a consensus of county planning staffs and local bicyclists for evaluation; roadway improvements which include selective shoulder widening, bike lanes, and marked routes will soon be programmed in the TIP for design and construction. Concurrently, Montgomery County issued a call to municipalities to come forward with their own bicycle facility projects. Six municipalities responded, proposing improvements to 60 miles of roadway, at a cost of $4.4 million. Bicycle facility improvements (shoulders, bike lanes) made incidental to scheduled roadway widening, resurfacing and new construction projects are a cost efficient way to increase bicycle mobility. DVRPC and the Pennsylvania counties have begun to review all such PennDOT projects for their impact on the level of service afforded to bicyclists and pedestrians, and to work with PennDOT engineers to make sure that the projects result in an improved environment for bicyclists and pedestrians.
