Coast Day

On Saturday, September 15, 2007, The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission conducted an interactive educational exhibit entitled "How 'otter' you spend our region's money?" for the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary 6th Annual Southeastern Pennsylvania Coast Day held at Penn's Landing in Philadelphia, PA.

We asked "If you were the governor of Pennsylvania, which issues would be most important to you?" People had to make difficult decisions on which regional issues our area's governments should spend public funds. Participants were given five $1 million dollar "Coast Day" coins and asked to divide their dollars into eight important categories that matter the most to them.

Approximately 400 people from Southeastern Pennsylvania decided to contribute the following amounts of "Coast Day" dollars to each category:

Category Funding (in millions)
"Improve Schools and Libraries" (Public Schools and Libraries Services)
$317
"Clean Up Pollution" (Environmental remediation"
$277
"Protect Wildlife" (Wildlife Protection)
$262
"Save Farms" (Farmland preservation)
$208
"Invest in Cleaner Energy" (Alternative Energy)
$197
"Restore Floodplains" (Floodplain restoration and flooding mitigation)
$185
"Build and Fix Roads" (Road construction and maintenance)
$181
"Buy More Trains and Buses" (Public transportation improvements)
$145

Every day, Federal, State, Regional and Local governments decide how we spend our public funds. On Coast Day, our regional citizens decided how we could spend our public funds.

DVRPC has participated in the Southeastern Pennsylvania Coast Day every year since its inception in 2002.
