Transit-Oriented Development
Schuylkill Valley Metro
Schuylkill Valley MetroThe Schuylkill Valley Metro (SVM) is a proposed 62-mile rail transit system between Reading and Philadelphia. The idea for the system was developed in response to the consistently increasing transportation demands in the Schuylkill River Valley area. The opportunity to use existing railroad systems and stations for a new suburban transit corridor offers tremendous potential to meet such demands while reducing automobile dependency.
The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, SEPTA and BARTA, Berks, Chester and Montgomery Counties, the City of Philadelphia, the Pennsylvania Environmental Council and the Reinvestment Fund were partners in a two-year study from 2000 to 2002 that explored how the SVM system would best serve municipalities along the route. The proposed train route hopes to transport approximately 50,000 passengers a day between Reading and Philadelphia by 2007.
