Staff Profile: Colin Kirby, Data Specialist, Office of GIS
What was your first job?
My first job was as a host at a sushi restaurant in Manayunk. Getting free sushi and miso soup was one of the main perks of the job.
How did you end up at DVRPC?
I was working in tech before joining DVRPC, but I had a stronger interest in GIS and urban planning. I had recently moved back to Philly from Minneapolis and was considering grad school when I saw that DVRPC was hiring. I thought it would be a perfect blend of the two.
What are your responsibilities?
I primarily work on developing and modernizing our web maps and tools. The work combines data science, cartography, and web development.
What is your favorite part of working at DVRPC?
It’s really fulfilling to work on projects that directly impact our region with the people at DVRPC who are very passionate about serving their communities.
If you could immediately implement any change to the region, what would you do?
I’d fully fund SEPTA so they can accomplish their goals laid out in the Accelerate Plan. Fifteen minute regional rail frequency, modernized infrastructure, and improved accessibility would do so much for our region.
What is something colleagues don’t know about you?
I’m an avid pool player and captain of a pool team. You can often find me at the South Philly Pool Hall.
What is your favorite leisure activity?
I love to aimlessly wander around Philadelphia. Some days, I’ll walk 5+ miles around philly stopping at various coffee shops, vintage stores, and parks. Usually it ends with playing pool at a bar.
What is your recent obsession?
Cooking with my wok.
What is the last book you read?
The last book I read was Pachinko by Min Jin Lee. It’s a really fantastic historical fiction novel covering 4 generations of a Korean family that immigrated to Japan during the Japanese occupation of Korea.
What is the best music you’ve heard recently?
My favorite artist lately is @, who just released an album Autosmile. Their name makes them difficult to google, but I highly recommend checking them out. They are local to Philly as well.
Are you a cat or dog person?
I’m a cat person, and I have two wonderful cats, Calcifer and Mishka!
What are you looking forward to the most in the next year?
The Sixers winning a championship.
