Transportation Engineer/Systems Modeling Intern

JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Intern will assist in maintaining and/or applying travel demand models to address the impacts and benefits of alternative transportation investments and policies on land use, highway traffic, transit ridership, and air quality. A strong technical background is a must, with knowledge of or experience in any of the following considered a plus: travel forecasting, TRANPLAN, TRANSCAD, ArcGIS, Microsoft Excel or Access, SYNCHRO, CORSIM, and Highway Capacity software.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Assists in the development, calibration, validation, application, and documentation of transportation and land use forecasting methods.
• Applies standard statistical data processing programs and techniques to tabulate, process and analyze census and travel survey data.
• Prepares input data for simulation models including coding of transportation networks; tabulates travel simulation model outputs using GIS tools and tabular forms, compares results with actual current and historical data.
• Proofreads and helps to develop written technical reports.

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge of the principles, practices, and objectives of transportation planning and travel demand modeling.
• Knowledge of standard statistical techniques and research methods used in transportation planning and traffic engineering.
• Knowledge of software and techniques for geographic information systems (GIS), database design and analysis, electronic communications, word processing and spreadsheets.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, planning officials, and the general public.

AVAILABILITY:
This position requires a minimum commitment of 10-20 hours per week (2-3 days/week).
Up to 37.5 hours per week during the summer semester.

SALARY:
Paid position at hourly rates. Students with PHEAA Work Study grants encouraged.

MINIMUM EDUCATION & TRAINING:
Must be in an approved internship program as part of a college or university, or have a baccalaureate degree in any related discipline, plus substantial experience, interest or involvement in transit, bicycle and pedestrian transportation issues.
