The intent of the Department of Housing and Community Development's HOPE VI program is to empower residents of the nation's public housing to improve their lives and their communities through hard work. Nationwide, HOPE VI funding will pay for physical improvements to the existing public housing stock; new construction of additional public housing units; demolition of some of the most deteriorated public housing units; job training and employment programs for public housing residents; crime prevention and substance abuse counseling and treatment; improving public housing management; and assisting the nation's working public housing residents and other poor working families in becoming homeowners.

The Chester County Housing Authority was recently awarded $16.4 million in HUD grants, which will be used for new construction, modernization and demolition as well as homeownership assistance programs in Coatesville.
