6. Current and Future Tasks/ Action Items
- Discussion on how to proceed with the following (note that for some of these tasks a couple of members of the Council might need to take a lead and get a little more involved; please take that into consideration)
- Getting involved in bicycle education. Discuss strategies on how to integrate bicycle education into the school curriculum for NJ schoolchildren (review and follow-up on Bill Hoffman's presentation about the Pennsylvania Pedalcycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee and it's education subcommittee that has drafted a curriculum for PA schools). Discuss other comprehensive programs and initiatives to teach schoolchildren safe riding and traffic skills (e.g. after-school programs). Consider establishment of subcommittee to focus on this task.
- Discuss 'Safe Routes To School' for New Jersey and how the Council can get involved/ take the lead.
- Organize communication with AARP about a possible development of an education program on walking and bicycling, as many older drivers do not seem to know how to respond to cyclists in traffic.
- Compiling a list of missing links in the transportation infrastructure for bicyclists throughout the state.
- Developing a plan for inclusion of bicycle access at all major destination points throughout the state. Examples include: malls, airports, (regional) rail stations, colleges/universities, state parks.
- Discuss post 9/11 including developing a pro-active plan for the inclusion of bicycle infrastructure and accommodations in any and all new construction. Make sure that bicyclists are not shut down / shut out in high alert situations. How can we prevent the closing of the Ben Franklin Bridge to pedestrians and bicyclists from repeating itself?
- Review of State Access Management Code/ Standards/ Regulations as part of future tasks of the Council. Consider establishment of subcommittee to focus on this task and invite speaker from NJDOT for our next meeting to provide a review.
- Brainstorm ideas for future special meetings (let's try to set up a special meeting for August)
