Transportation Safety & Congestion Management Intern

Job Description

This internship is an opportunity to improve multimodal transportation safety and better manage regional congestion. It involves transportation and land use planning work with the Safety and Security program, Regional Congestion Management Process, and Central Jersey Transportation Forum. It will involve independent work on discrete projects as well as providing assistance with broader efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in transportation studies including preparation and analysis of technical data
  • Assists in summarizing written material and in preparing reports and memoranda
  • Assists in preparing visual displays including crash diagrams, charts, and maps
  • Performs related work as required

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel and Access
  • Ability to assimilate complex technical information and write about it clearly
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS
  • Ability to perform field studies and summarize findings
  • Ability to establish effective relations with associates and with representatives of public and private organizations
  • Familiarity with Synchro and Visio software packages is helpful though not required
  • Knowledge of and interest in transportation and land use planning principles and issues

Availability

This position requires a minimum commitment of 12 hours per week, preferably 15 (2-3 days/week) for a full semester.

Compensation

Students with Work Study grants preferred.

Minimum Education and Training

Must be in an approved internship program as part of a college or university, or have a baccalaureate degree in any discipline, plus experience in transportation issues. Given the complexity of tasks and need to be able to work independently, this internship may be better suited to a person who has already completed a baccalaureate degree or who has substantial work experience.
