Environmental Planning Urban Forestry Intern
Job Description
Assist with DVRPC's street tree survey of targeted neighborhoods in Philadelphia. The intern will work with a small team to conduct a field-level survey of the existing trees and empty tree pits in eight neighborhoods. Using a handheld GPS unit, the intern will record information including size, health, and species of existing trees. Empty tree pits, dead trees, and stumps will also be recorded. Other related information will be recorded as necessary.
Responsibilities
The intern will assist professional staff with field research, data collection, data analysis, graphics, and report preparation. Intern will be an integral member of a project team and will participate and assist in meetings with municipal officials, community organizations, study advisory committees, and other government agencies.
Qualifications
- Interest and experience in regional planning issues in Greater Philadelphia.
- Interest and background in forestry, horticulture, landscape architecture, and/or environmental resources.
- Ability to travel to and within Philadelphia neighborhoods using personal car, bike, or public transit (travel costs to be reimbursed).
- Ability to work outside during the summer months.
- Background knowledge in tree identification and tree health preferred.
Availability
Position requires a commitment of 37.5 hours per week during the summer.
Compensation
Students with Work Study grants.
Minimum Education and Training
Must have completed at least TWO YEARS of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master's program (preferred), or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
