Transportation Planning Intern

Job Description

The Intern participates in transportation planning studies, programs, and surveys. Emphasis is placed upon learning the principles and practices of transportation planning, and transportation operations planning in particular. Close supervision is provided by a supervisor who assigns tasks, gives preliminary instructions, reviews work in process and upon completion for quality and adherence to established standards. This kind of work requires good computer skills, an affinity to quantitative methods, and a strong interest in transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in transportation planning studies and programs including collection, entry, tabulation, and analysis of technical information.
  • Assists in the assemblage and analysis of data to identify potential access management case study corridors.
  • Assists in the preparation of presentation material including graphs, maps, and other visual displays.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in transportation planning and transportation policies.
  • Strong computer skills in areas such as data analysis, spreadsheet and database software, geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Specific knowledge in traffic micro-simulation is a plus. Also appreciated is experience with DVRPC's preferred software tools: ArcGIS, Excel, Access, VISSIM, Adobe Illustrator.
  • Ability to perform field studies and data collection.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Availability

This position requires a commitment of 37.5 hours per week during summer 2011 and a minimum commitment of 15 hours (2 days) per week during the academic semester.

Compensation

Students with Work Study grants preferred.

Minimum Education and Training

Must have completed at least THREE YEARS of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master's program (preferred), or an equivalent combination of experience and training, with an interest or involvement in transportation engineering and planning.
