Transportation Planning Intern

Job Description

The Intern participates in transportation planning studies, programs, and surveys. Emphasis is placed upon learning the principles and practices of transportation planning, and transportation operations planning in particular. Close supervision is provided by a supervisor who assigns tasks, gives preliminary instructions, reviews work in process and upon completion for quality and adherence to established standards.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in transportation planning studies, programs, and surveys including collection, entry, tabulation, and analysis of technical data.
  • Assists in the preparation of study reports and memoranda.
  • Assists in the preparation of presentation material including graphs, maps and other visual displays.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of web-based applications.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Access
  • Familiarity with ArcGIS, and ArcIMS
  • Ability to perform field studies and data collection.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and relate geographic data and statistical data.
  • Ability to establish effective relations with associates and with representatives of public and private organizations.
  • Ability to analyze and prepare technical data into clear and concise reports.
  • Knowledge of, and interest in, transportation operations planning, Inteligent Transportation Systems (ITS), and GIS for transportation.

Availability

This position requires a minimum commitment of 10-20 hours per week (2-3 days/week).

Compensation

Students with Work Study grants preferred.

Minimum Education and Training

Must be in an approved internship program as part of a college or university, or have a baccalaureate degree in any discipline, plus substantial experience, interest or involvement in transportation issues.
