Transportation Engineer Intern

Job Description

DVRPC is the Metropolitan Planning Organization of the Greater Philadelphia region with a population of 5.5 million. DVRPC’s Office of Transit, Bicycle, and Pedestrian Planning is engaged in a series of technical analyses using VISSIM microsimulation software to estimate the benefits of various improvement strategies. These forecasts/estimates are used to help inform regional policies and transportation investments. The intern will assist in various tasks in the context of VISSIM analyses. This kind of work requires good computer skills, an affinity to quantitative methods, and a strong interest in transportation.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the development, data collection for, calibration, validation and application of transportation microsimulation models.
  • Processes and analyzes data, including socio-economic and demographic data, geographic information, transit schedules, network data, traffic control information, traffic counts and surveys.
  • Prepares input data for simulation models; codes transportation network data; tabulates and visualizes model outputs and compares results with actual current and historical data.
  • Contributes text, tables, and graphics to various technical reports.

Qualifications

  • Strong interest in transportation planning and transportation policies.
  • Proven record in the application of quantitative methods.
  • Strong computer skills in areas such as data analysis, spreadsheet and database software such as Microsoft Access, traffic engineering software such as Synchro.
  • Specific knowledge in VISSIM.
  • Programming skills in a language like Python or VBA are a plus, as is knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment.

Availability

This position requires a minimum commitment of 25 hours per week. Ideal start date: September or October 2010.

Compensation

Students with Work Study grants preferred.

Minimum Education and Training

Must have completed at least THREE YEARS of a college/university program or be enrolled in a master's program (preferred), or an equivalent combination of experience and training, plus substantial experience, interest, or involvement in transportation engineering and planning.
