Smart Growth Intern

Job Description

This is Masters level work assisting the Office of Smart Growth. The intern will participate in various stages of research, planning, and report preparation. The intern will also assist in implementation by providing public relations assistance and marketing for a municipal marketing program. Issues to be addressed may include: land use, corridor planning, housing, transit-oriented development, and revitalization of older communities, among others. Intern may be responsible for policy research, quantitative analysis, GIS production, outreach, and surveying.

Responsibilities

  • Assist professional staff with research, data collection, graphic design, and report preparation.
  • Participate or assist in stakeholder meetings, study committees, and municipal outreach.
  • Conduct field work with other team members.
  • Maintain content management systems and provide basic internet research.
  • Assist in the writing and development of quarterly newsletters and other promotional pieces.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of and experience with general urban planning and smart growth principles. 
  • Excellent writing and communications skills.
  • Experience in, or knowledge of, journalism and marketing.
  • Ability to prioritize work and multi-task. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office and website content management systems. 
  • Ability to establish effective relationships with outside organizations and community contacts. 
  • Basic knowledge of Philadelphia region is desired. 
  • Ability to work independently and in teams.

Availability

The position requires a commitment of at least 22.5 hours per week over the fall 2011 semester.

Compensation

Work-study or hourly rate.

Minimum Experience and Training

Must be enrolled in or have completed a Master's program in a related field.
