Graphic Design Co-op/Internship
Job Description
As part of our annual work program, DVRPC produces over 40 reports, brochures, posters and PowerPoint presentation templates for our professional staff. We are looking for a highly motivated and creative person to assist our Senior Graphic Designer and Graphic Artist in a PC-environment on challenging and rewarding projects under supervision of the Manager of Web & Creative Services. Assist on existing projects; provide assistance on projects with tight deadlines, as well as general creative support to staff on their various needs.
Responsibilities
- Confers with design staff regarding project objectives and possible design layouts.
- Assists in developing design concepts for graphic materials.
- Arranges one or more preliminary layouts based upon available space, knowledge of layout principles, project objectives, and aesthetic design concepts.
- Reviews sample of finished layout or alternatives with Project Manager.
- Layout reports in industry-standard fashion.
- Prepares final cover design, chapter dividers, charts, graphs, illustrations, color correction of photographs, PowerPoint presentations and other artwork, as needed.
- Assists assembling final layouts for outside or internal production, including color separations, where needed.
- Performs related work as required.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of design techniques, principles, tools and instruments involved in graphic design productions.
- Considerable knowledge of Quark Xpress 7 (especially Style Sheets) and the Adobe Creative Suite (CS4) software suite, particularly Photoshop & Illustrator (InDesign is a plus).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word (setting up basic design templates), Excel (chart data) and PowerPoint (Master Templates).
- Great organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Great written and oral communication skills.
- Good working knowledge of computer platform technology (PC Windows XP required, Macintosh a plus) and basic internal network concepts.
- Basic knowledge of prepress production requirements, such as color separations and setup for full-bleeds.
- Ability to come up with unusual or clever visual and graphic ideas about a given topic or situation, or develop creative ways to solve a problem.
- Ability to match or detect differences between colors, including shades of color and brightness.
- Ability to describe and present graphic concepts.
Availability
This position requires a minimum commitment of 15 to a maximum of 22.5 hours per week.
Compensation
Students with Work Study grants preferred.
Minimum Education and Training
Working towards a Bachelor's degree with six months experience in graphic design, commercial art, illustration or visual communications OR Associate's degree with one year experience; OR equivalent combination of experience and training. Samples of relevant work are required to be submitted with application and a portfolio of relevant work is required if interviewed.
