Overview
Tredyffrin Township was awarded a $32,000 EGGS grant to improve walkability in Paoli and surrounding neighborhoods in an effort to reinforce Paoli as a destination, and to consider bicycle and pedestrian connections between Paoli and the Chester Valley Trail.
Objectives
The Paoli section of Tredyffrin Township is an important employment, commercial, and transportation center within the township and surrounding communities. Through the grant, Tredyffrin Township seeks to document the obstacles and gaps that pedestrians encounter, and make recommendations for removing these obstacles and closing these gaps. In addition, the study will examine the various routes that could be employed to connect the Paoli and Daylesford station areas with the Chester Valley Trail, and make recommendations to achieve the most feasible linkages.
Key products of the project include:
- A sketch plan identifying potential trail or sidewalk alignments and concept designs to show type of facility (shared-use path, sidewalk, bike lane, or combinations thereof). A set of alternatives will be developed to address community desires, protect the environment, minimize construction and ongoing maintenance costs, and comply with applicable guidelines and best practices;
- cost estimates to implement the proposed alternatives; and
- a final plan developed with extensive public and study committee input.
Status
Tredyffrin Township selected the firm Whitman, Requardt and Associates LLC along with Simone Collins Landscape Architects to conduct the study. After the initiation of the study, the township received an additional $15,000 award from the William Penn Foundation to augment the study efforts with 1) detailed discussions with property owners who may be affected by the proposed connections with the Chester Valley Trail; 2) additional survey work, concept designs and construction cost estimates of preferred trail connections; and 3) additional public involvement to analyze the alternatives. A public open house was held in March 24, 2010, and six Study Committee meetings were held throughout the process. The study was completed in April, 2011 and the Board of Supervisors adopted the study by resolution in May, 2011.
